It all began when two enthusiastic young men refused to accept the fact that after Szeged SC, Szeged's basketball association wound up, quality basketball for men would 'become extinct' in Szeged, so they founded SZEDEÁK in 1992.
The name implies various things: on one hand, the team's origin and the fact that its players are students. The two young enthusiasts, whose names are Csaba Molnár and Domonkos Bonifert, recruited a team from students and started them immediately in NB II. Although in the first year the boys aged 15-16 did not play very successfully, the second season brought the team serious success also drawing the attention of professionals on them. Then came the third year and the fast-improving young players won the NB II Championship. Consequently, in the autumn of 1995, incorporating the players of the promising team of Szegedi Postás, SZEDEÁK qualified for playing in the category B of the NBI League. Among the 28 NBI teams, SZEDEÁK ranked 20th then, the following year the team landed in the 18th ranking, while in 1997 and at the end of the 1998 Championship they ranked No. 16. The team hardly missed landing among the first 12 and participating in group 'A'.
The great dream finally came true in 2001 and the team entered the category A of the NBI League. The seasons of 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 meant a miracle for SZEDEÁK. 90% of the team was still made up of players born in Szeged and bred by the association, although the former high school students attended university by then. In the Championship hosting teams armed with professional and foreign players, SZEDEÁK performed excellently maintaining its firm position in both seasons.
Despite the fact that it landed in the 9th ranking of the Championship, in 2003, the team was forced to step back from playing in the category A of the NBI League due to financial difficulties. The vast majority of the players bred by the association were taken by other NBI/category A teams (Gábor Drahos - Univer; Attila Tanács - Univer; Zsolt Kis - Atomeromu; András Molnár– Mafc; István Nyilas - Albacomp). With its remaining junior base, the adult team of SZEDEÁK participated in NB II again in the seasons of 2003/2004 and 2004/2005. Unfortunately, financial support further decreased and therefore, by 2005 the management of the association had to face the decision of whether to use the rest of its sources to maintain the junior base of approximately 100 players or to ensure the existence of the adult NB II team. The management of the association chose to maintain the junior base, and was forced to discontinue the operation of the adult team. This led to the consequence that after more than 50 years the season of 2005/2006 was the first one when Szeged had no adult men's basketball team in the National Championship.
Despite the fact that financial support underwent constant reduction and the association's operation faced increasing difficulties, the quality of professional work remained to be high. The junior teams of SZEDEÁK continued to land among the best ones in the Hungarian Basketball Federation's junior championships, ranking No. 3, 4, 7 and 13.
As 2006 may be called a crisis in the history of SZEDEÁK, the same year also brought about revival. Watching the association's heroic struggle for survival and its outstanding performance in the area of young talents, the University of Szeged and SOLVO Biotechnology decided to join SOLE-MIZO in becoming its major sponsors and restructure SZEDEÁK to become a real university basketball association.
The adult team was set up again, and entered the second class of the National Championship under the name SZTE-SZEDEÁK, where lead by Zoltán Vezsenyi it won the championship after a wonderful season. Starting from the autumn of 2007, SZTE-SZEDEÁK continued to sweep on and play in NBI/category B. Only present and former students of the University of Szeged and players who formerly participated in the junior teams of SZEDEÁK could become players of the adult team. In the meantime, the junior teams have also gathered new momentum, the different age-group teams of SZTE-SZEDEÁK participate in junior championships with an increasing number of players and growing success: in 2009 the U20 team, led by István Nyilas won the bronze medal in the finals of the national championship.
In Szeged men's basketball has assumed a position in the city's sports life that corresponds to its popularity. In 2008 and 2009 the adult team ranked No. 13 and No. 9 and in May 2010 they qualified themselves into NBI/category A, led by the head coach Domonkos Bonifert and under the professional advisory of Péter Fodor. As rookie the team did not ashamed: after beating the 2008 national champion Falco and 2009 gold medal winner Paks with Zsolt Kiss and Gábor Drahos in the season of 2010/2011 SZTE-SZEDEÁK ranked No. 11.
